Who’s Next in Line: Which Premier League Manager Will Face the Axe First?

Struggling Saints might consider a change

Alex Hilton

It appears that Erik ten Hag’s days at Manchester United are numbered, but the club’s hierarchy might try to hold onto him longer to avoid more embarrassment after their chaotic search for a new manager over the summer. This resulted in them extending the Dutchman’s contract.

Sean Dyche’s position at Goodison Park could be at risk, but with little clarity on decision-making, my bet is on Russell Martin at Southampton to be the next to go. The Saints have started the season poorly with three consecutive losses, and if they continue to be thrashed, the club bosses will likely run out of patience soon.

While it’s not always fair to sack managers after gaining promotion, Russell Martin is the favorite to be the next managerial casualty at 9/1. Southampton’s possession-based style has not been effective, leading to their defensive vulnerabilities and lack of attacking threat.

Unless there is a significant shift for the Saints, they risk falling behind at the bottom of the table. A change in tactics is necessary, and Martin’s dedication to his style makes him an appealing choice.

Wanderers had a disappointing performance against Nottingham Forest, and with tough fixtures against Newcastle, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Brentford, Manchester City, and Brighton coming up, it’s unlikely they will pick up many points. This could leave O’Neil on shaky ground.

The uncertainty surrounding Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United is causing a stir, but there may be value in looking further down the list for the first managerial casualty of the season.

Henry Hardwicke

While Erik ten Hag and Sean Dyche are the frontrunners, Manchester United and Everton have not always made wise decisions in recent times. Everton may not have the financial resources to replace Dyche.

Tottenham will face Arsenal in the north London derby, and if Spurs fall to their rivals, the pressure on Ange Postecoglou could intensify.
